Best of the Best in 2020 Part 4
/We are back today with yet another installment of our “Best of” series from 2020. As I stated previously, these aren’t in any particular order, they are just personal thoughts on highlights from the season.
Bill Putnam Crushes NMRA Limited Street
There are very few times in the history of heads-up series racing that a driver absolutely dominates a class. Well in 2020 that is exactly what the SN95 Mustang of Bill Putnam, along with his main man Sharad from UPR did. Not only did Bill seal the deal in Limited Street, but he also swept the entire race series this season, winning every event on the schedule. Bill also finished the season with the class record.
XRP Shuts down the area
Big Jake, one of the best-known promoters in the state of Texas and elsewhere threw a race this fall that from what I saw in photos was indescribably huge. At one point I was told that they had to stop letting people in because it was at capacity. Traffic backed up to the interstate and everyone had one hell of a great time. A huge congratulations to Big Jake and XRP for handling and holding such a massive event!
Mid-West Drag Racing Series Welcomes Alcohol Funny Cars
Keith Haney, the founder of the Mid-West Pro Mod Series made, even more, moves this season. Along with the help of a great staff that includes E3xtreme Co-Founder Ellen Eschenbacher, Randy Hancock, Jimmy Boles, and more, it was announced that the series would add a massive class to the mix. It was then announced that they would be bringing in Alcohol Funny Cars to run eighth-mile. With that came the series name change to Mid-West Drag Racing Series. Fans were treated to not only some of the quickest Pro Mods on the planet, but they were also going to get to see NHRA heavyweights in Alcohol Funny Car battling it out at the rest of the events. Now there are four top classes in MWDRS, that being Pro Mod, Alcohol Funny Car, Top Sportsman, and Top Dragster, to go along with their two Junior classes.
Marcus Birt Still the King of Nitrous
In a world where nitrous seems to be a thing of the past in most heads-up classes, apparently, Marcus didn’t get the memo. Race after race he is out there with his nitrous powered Vette making it glaringly apparent to his competition that a nitrous combo can and does win. Even after a terrifying flight/crash early in the season, there has been no one that truly challenges his domination when it comes to nitrous combos. There are plenty of cars that are running the laughing gas, and plenty will be getting close, but until someone can knock Marcus off the nitrous mountain, he will be the king of the gas!
