It appears as though we have some real battles on our hands in the NMCA this season, and with only two races left before crowning a champion, almost every class is still up for grabs. 

It's not often that we get this far into the season and everything is still this closely bunched together. NMCA, one of the longest running drag racing series in the country, rolls into the home of $1 a pound ice cream this weekend. That's right, their second to last stop on the 2017 tour is at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Oh. 

Being less than a month removed from the epic battles that occurred at Route 66 for the Superbowl, the drivers have put that out of their mind and are concentrating on one thing and one thing only, a championship come the end of next month. First they have to have a hell of a showing in Norwalk though if they want to sport that #1 on their car in 2018. 

The way the point structure is in the NMCA, there are really only two classes where it could be settled before we get to Indy next month and the finals. Which means that the heads up drivers better be watching those numbers close. There are numerous heads up classes that are less than 2 full rounds worth of points separating number one and two.  None of that includes the extra points for attendance or setting records. Plus, to top it off, there is a "drop race" because you only take 5 of 6 races. This is going to get very interesting and very mathematical, so in the mean time let's see where we are at. 

Over in the King of Kings class, Pro Mod, the Man that will go to any length to take home that championship is still sitting atop the standings. Adam Flamholc still leads the Illinois based Steve Summers by 70 points. Let's not forget that Adam wrecked his Vette at Joliet and by the following weekend in St. Louis, he was already in his Mustang that he purchased from Jason Hamstra at Joliet and took to Chris Duncan to get ready for the next weekend. Adam is all in on getting that championship.  Steve, along with Jason Hamstra are nippin on his heels though. This class is most likely going to come down to the final couple rounds of racing in 2017 before we have a champion, which is why Norwalk is so damn important. 

In Radial Wars, the top five are mathematically all still in it for the championship coming into Norwalk. Realistically though, it appears to be a two man race between Marty Stinnett and "Super Dave" Adkins for the championship, with Josh Klugger and Isaac Preston just waiting for one of those two to drop the ball. We know that Super Dave and Josh both had engine failure at Joliet, but I am sure everyone will be locked, loaded, and ready to hunt the bear this weekend. 

Nitrous Pro Street has come down to two heavy hitters, Jeff Rudolph and Don Baskin. Two dramatically different cars, but these two have been the ace's of the class all season. Jeff managed to pull off victories at both the combined races this year two, in front of the biggest stage. It doesn't seem to matter who Jeff is faced off against. In the four previous races this season, Jeff has either won or runnered up. Watch for the same to happen this weekend as they take one more step towards Indy and securing that championship. 

Extreme Street, which just made the switch over to 1/8th mile racing starting at Joliet is still a four man show this season. With less than four rounds of racing separating the four cars at the top. Sitting at the top though is Jessie Coulter followed very closely by Scott Guiler. The two of them are separated by a mere 40 points right now. Rounding out the top four is Eric Kenward, who will be there in his Mustang, as the wagon is under the knife, and the freak from the mountains of Georgia, Bart Tobener. This could get very interesting is anyone stumbles. 

When we talk N/A 10.5 this season, we talk about the man in charge at G-Force Transmissions, and that is none other than Leonard Long with his SN95 Mustang. At this point, Leonard has really put a gap between him and the rest of the field. The fight here is for the 2-4 spots as they are separated by a measly 35 points from 2 to 4. Even though Leonard has only record one victory this season, his consistency has kept him on top.  It would be very tough for Leonard to not take home the championship this season. 

The small tire madness of Street Outlaw comes rippin' through next. This is NMCA's rule set that compares to X275. Charlie Cooper is laying waste to most of the class this season. He comes into Norwalk with a commanding 310 point lead over Jacky McCarty. Now let's remember though, that's only really a 3 round lead. Jarod Wenrick is only 15 points behind Jacky as well. So Charlie has to keep his foot to the floor and not worry about his rear view if he wants to take home that championship this season. 

In Chevrolet Performance Stock it's also a two man race between Glenn Pushis and Jesse Wilson, who are separated by less than two rounds of racing, with the rest of the class looking up. 

So if you are in the Norwalk area, and you are a drag racing fan, you should head on over to Summit Motorsports Park this weekend and check out the NMCA's second to last race of the season. The throwdown for supremacy will be epic.
